When Jay and I were first launching East Village Vibe, we reached out to a couple of people to join the team to offer more flavor. One of those people suggested we try Mercadito for good Mexican, so we happily accepted.
When I did an image search of Mercadito, I was expecting something different because they have a few different locations. Their East Village location, on Ave. B, is small.
Don’t let that dissuade you from going, though, because this place rocks.
When we got there, we immediately ordered a round of margaritas. This quickly turned into a second round because they were tasty … really tasty. I like to be able to taste the tequila in my margarita and they didn’t disappoint. While a bit on the pricier side at $10.50 a pop, the flavor made me forget that for a little while.
To go with our drinks we ordered the guacamole sampler which includes three different types: Piña, tradicional, and mango. Being a bit of a traditionalist, the tradicional was my favorite; however, the other two were quickly finished, so obviously they were good as well.
Back in 2006, New York Magazine said Mercadito made the best fish taco in New York City. I hadn’t read that review before going, so I sadly didn’t get the fish tacos. But I did get the carne and let me tell you … wow. The steak was tender, the avocado-tomatillo crema was tasty, and it was packaged up perfectly. You get four tacos with your order and they were gone a lot faster than I realized was possible.
Finally, I wish I could remember the waitress’ name because she was probably the best part of this meal. Jay couldn’t eat because he was dealing with some stomach issues so I obviously teased him about this because the food was so damn good. “More water on the rocks?” she’d ask with a grin when the three of us would order another round of margaritas. (I hate you, Jacob.–Ed.)
At the end of the day, Mercadito (179 Ave. B b/t 11th & 12th Sts.) is a great restaurant located in the heart of Alphabet City. If you want a good margarita and some delicious tacos, go there. But expect to spend close to $25 or $30 a person if you’re going to get guacamole, tacos, and a margarita.
